About Dr. Norlidah

Scientist

Policy Expert

Coach

Master Teacher

I am a scientist by training, an educator by vocation, and a builder of learning systems shaped by inquiry, care, and clarity. My work is grounded in rigorous scientific training, extensive policy experience, and a lifelong commitment to education that strengthens independence rather than dependency.

My academic foundation spans the life and physical sciences, culminating in a PhD in Solid-State Magnetochemistry, supported by earlier training in materials science, physico-chemistry, and natural sciences. This scientific formation instilled not only technical expertise, but a disciplined way of thinking: the ability to hold uncertainty, explore unconventional ideas without collapsing into belief, and distinguish clearly between experience, metaphor, and empirical claim. For me, science has never been a narrowing lens; it has been an expansion of intellectual freedom, tempered by discernment.

Alongside science and teaching, I spent over two decades contributing to national and international policy development. Beginning my career as a scientist-lecturer at Universiti Sains Malaysia, I was seconded to the Prime Minister’s Department, serving in the Office of the Science Advisor to the Prime Minister under Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and then, Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi. From 2001 to 2022, my body of work spanned education policy, science and technology strategy, national development frameworks (Rancangan Malaysia), and inter-ministerial initiatives, with limited involvement in economic planning. I later held senior roles across public and private universities, consulted for the Ministry of Science and the National Space Agency, and served as the first Director of International Office at a Malaysian public university. My final formal appointment was as Advisor in Science, Technology, and Education to a State Foundation chaired by the Chief Minister.

Academic Formation

My intellectual foundations were laid early. I was born and raised in London, where my primary education instilled habits of inquiry, critical thinking, and intellectual independence. At the age of ten, I returned to Malaysia, where my roots were anchored and my sense of cultural belonging deepened. I was educated at Main Convent for the secondary school level before, at nineteen, being sent to France on Malaysian scholarships. France proved formative in a different way — it crystallised my thinking, sharpened my discipline, and shaped the intellectual and personal maturity that continues to define my work today.Beyond this, my scientific training was undertaken entirely within rigorous French academic institutions, grounded in laboratory research, systems thinking, and methodological discipline. My qualifications include:

  • PhD (France) — Solid-State Magnetochemistry of Rare-Earth Transition Metal Compounds.
  • M.Phil (France) — Materials Science and Engineering
  • M.Sc (France) — Physico-Chemistry of Natural Materials for Industrial Finality.
  • B.Sc (Honours) (France) — Physico-Chemistry of Natural Materials for Industrial Finality.
  • B.Sc (France) — Nature and Life Sciences.

This trajectory reflects a continuous and coherent scientific formation, rooted in analytical thinking, experimental reasoning, and cross-disciplinary integration. It trained not only my technical competence, but also my capacity to question assumptions, work across scales, and remain intellectually honest in the face of complexity.

Unlike traditional tutoring, which fosters dependency, the Mahutahu?! methodology builds independence. We do not spoon-feed answers or provide shortcut solutions. Instead, we guide students through structured problem-solving, questioning techniques, and analytical reasoning, enabling them to think for themselves.

A teacher applying independent learning is not just an instructor but a coach, mentor, and strategist. This method requires:

  • Questioning over Explaining – Instead of giving direct answers, we lead students to discover them.
  • Encouraging Intellectual Struggle – Learning happens when students engage, reflect, and refine their understanding.
  • Teaching How to Learn – We train students to seek knowledge, evaluate sources, and apply concepts, ensuring lifelong skills.

This unique approach combines an authentic understanding of subjects while ensuring students are properly prepared for exams and outstanding results.

Skillset of an Independent Learning Coach & Teacher

  • Facilitator of Critical Thinking – Guides students to question, analyze, and synthesize information rather than passively receive knowledge.
  • Designer of Structured Autonomy – Creates a learning framework that balances independence with necessary guidance, ensuring students stay on track.
  • Master of Strategic Questioning – Uses targeted questions to prompt deeper understanding, self-reflection, and problem-solving.
  • Expert in Adaptive Teaching – Identifies each student’s learning style, strengths, and weaknesses to tailor support accordingly.
  • Curator of Learning Resources – Provides high-quality materials, including notes, diagrams, past-year questions, and quizzes, to support independent study.
  • Confidence Builder – Develops students’ resilience, self-motivation, and intellectual confidence to engage with complex concepts.
  • Navigator of Digital Learning – Integrates technology and online tools effectively to enhance independent learning experiences.
  • Mentor & Motivator – Encourages self-discipline, responsibility, and a growth mindset, preparing students to excel beyond exams.

The Urgency of Independent Learning. In today’s rapidly changing world, passive learners fall behind. Students who rely on tutoring for every difficulty will struggle in higher education and the workforce, where independence, adaptability, and initiative are key. Mahutahu?! is for students who want to rise above the rest—to become leaders, innovators, and problem-solvers, authentic doers.

Beyond titles, my professional identity has been shaped by a deeply hybrid life. I was born and raised in London, where my early education laid the foundations of my thinking. Malaysia anchored my sense of belonging, values, and responsibility. France, where I studied as a Malaysian government scholar from the age of nineteen, crystallised my intellectual independence, discipline, and character. These three worlds did not compete within me; they integrated. Over time, this hybridity formed a universal orientation — one that allows me to move comfortably across cultures, systems, and ways of knowing without losing grounding.

A defining chapter of my life came when I stepped away from formal service to care for my mother, Tunku Hjh Sharifah Ainon binti Tunku Syed Abdullah Al Qadri, during her prolonged illness. For seven years, both my father and I were her caregivers and by her side until she passed. To some, this appeared as a departure from professional prominence, or even, a fall from professional grace. To me, it was the most demanding and most blessed chapter of my life — a time of service, love, and profound clarity. During this period, I asked difficult questions about value, purpose, and the true meaning of education. From this quiet and transformative time, Mahutahu?! was conceived.

I wish to pay homage to my parents — my late mother and my father, Haji Muhamed Noor bin Haji Mahmud — who taught me independence without abandonment, decency without pretence, and gave me the freedom to become fully myself. Their trust shaped my sense of responsibility and restraint.

I think that what truly sets me apart is my ability to “read” individuals, recognize their unique or untapped potential, and identify where they stand in their journey of self-growth. While I am not trained as a psychologist, my work as an educator is informed by long-term engagement with psychological perspectives on learning and human behaviour. Through mentorship and sustained exploration, I have developed an approach that helps students navigate learning blocks thoughtfully and ethically, while remaining mindful of professional boundaries. I do not rescue, over-direct, or carry outcomes that do not belong to me. Integrity, for me, lies in clarity — of role, responsibility, and limit.

My gift lies in transforming people into versions of themselves they never imagined they could become, unlocking talents that fuel their academic, personal, and professional development.

I am the Founder of Mahutahu?!, meaning ‘Want To Know?!’ in Malay.

For the past seven plus years, I have devoted my efforts to guiding students struggling with school and learning. My greatest satisfaction comes not just from helping students succeed but from transforming them into self-driven, resilient learners. I teach to learn independently. I coach resilience and mental strength. This I achieve through my Mahutahu?! initiative.

I am the Founder of Mahutahu?!, meaning ‘Want To Know?!’ in Malay. This is an initiative dedicated to fostering independent learning. In an era where information is abundant, the true challenge is not just acquiring knowledge but developing the ability to learn autonomously, think critically, and apply concepts effectively. Independent learning empowers students to take ownership of their education, equipping them with resilience, problem-solving skills, and adaptability—essential qualities for success in academics and beyond.

Through this initiative, I have coached students at secondary, primary, and pre-university levels in Science, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics and other critical subjects. Many of these students were left behind during the lockdown, and I worked closely with parents to help them regain confidence, rebuild their academic foundation, and excel in their studies. My efforts have helped transform children from being disconnected and discouraged to becoming self-driven and successful learners.

Through the Mahutahu?! approach and methodology, I have guided my students to build a strong academic foundation while nurturing their confidence and self-discipline. The approach clearly goes beyond traditional tutoring—I coach students to understand deeply, think independently, and thrive in their learning journey.

Notwithstanding, through in-person and online coaching for individuals or small groups, my reach has been limited — I wish to reach the hundreds and thousands. This is what motivates the next stage of Mahutahu?!—to build a web-based system, of which I shall be the architect and author. I want to create a digital learning platform that transcends traditional tutoring, making resilience, independent learning, and academic excellence accessible to a wider

My linguistic aptitude reflects my hybridity. I am a native English speaker, fluent in French and Malay, and can read in Arabic. I have explored a little bit of Korean, and I have an active commitment to mastering Bahasa Indonesia. Language, for me, is thus not ornamental; it is a means of understanding how societies think, organise meaning, and transmit values.

Language will always be a conduit that connects me with diverse communities. These skills enable me to engage meaningfully with people from varied cultural and linguistic backgrounds, bridging both cultural and professional gaps with ease.

In my personal time, I enjoy activities that challenge both mind and body. I have practiced boxing and Muay Thai, am learning the basics of Bo Staff martial arts, and find creative expression through writing. Listening to RnB music is another passion that fuels my inspiration. These pursuits enrich my life, keeping me grounded, balanced, and energized.

What truly sets me apart, however, is my ability to “read” individuals, recognize their unique or untapped potential, and identify where they stand in their journey of self-growth.

I am proud, just so proud of my students. I try to push them beyond their comfort zones. Here, you will find three of my e-books that present some of our achievements.

Orientation Beyond Malaysia

I am deeply grateful to Malaysia, where I was given opportunities that I would not have been afforded elsewhere — including scholarships from the Malaysian Government, the French Government, and Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), which made my academic and professional journey possible. I know that I would never have had a career as rich as the one I have had in Malaysia.

Having chosen to return and serve rather than remain abroad, I now look outward again — not as a representative of any state, but as an independent expert and individual. My intent is to contribute thoughtfully across ASEAN, particularly in education, science literacy, and capacity building, grounded in experience rather than institutional affiliation.

My eye is on Bandung and the strong, hardworking, intelligent peoples of Indonesia.
